Strintzis
Lines is a very well-known company on Italy - Greece lines as long as in Rafina
- Cyclades and to Cephalonia/Ithaca. The Piraeus-based company was founded in
1897 and the passenger services started in 1960. From the second half of the
eighties Strintzis gains many consideration on the line Ancona - Corfu -
Igoumenitsa - Patras and launches the new Jugoslavia line: first on Ancona -
Split line ( from Ancona six times a week at 23.00 returning from Split at
12.00), then also on the line Ancona - Dubrovnik - Corfu - Patras, more than a
trip, a little cruise. In 1987 Strintzis put on Ancona line the new “Ionian
Galaxy”: her purchase signed also for Greece the start of the cruise-ferry era:
in fact she was the first ship rebuilt with the target of considering the
sea-crossing a part of the vacation. From 1991, after the end of Jugoslavia services due to the war and a
little experience on Bari - Corfu - Igoumenitsa line, Strintzis became one of
the most powerful adriatic companies together with Anek, Minoan and Ventouris
Ferries; in 1994 she introduces the “Ionian Star”, the first Strintzis ship
offering the camping-aboard service; in
1995, with the coming of new Superfast Ferries ships Strintzis made a
joint-venture with Minoan Lines, serving also the port of Venice; the
Joint-Venture ended at the beginning of 1997 and Strintzis, although without
fast ferries as Minoan, Superfast and Anek, had good financial results because
of the economic fares. In 1999 Strintzis had, for the first time, a direct
connection Ancona - Patras, three times a week in 23 hours and ordered two fast
ferries at Van Der Giessen - De Noord yard, then in December, entered in Attica
Enterprises group, to which belongs Superfast Ferries. Then, in 2000, the
decision to change the company’s name and the look of the ships. My opinion is
that the ships were better under Strintzis livery… the last news about
Strintzis is that the contract with Skaramanga yards for “Blue Star Chios” and
“Blue Star Myconos” was resolved due to the high delay of deliverry; moreover
the programs to merger with ANEK were not continued. This is a great luck for
ANEK…
